Summary

From a youthful infatuation with a cabinet maker in a small Italian fishing village, to a passionate yet sporadic affair with a woman in New York, to an obsession with a man he meets at a tennis court, Enigma Variations charts one man's path through the great loves of his life。 Paul's intense desires, losses and longings draw him closer, not to a defined orientation, but to an understanding that 'heartache, like love, like low-grade fevers, like the longing to reach out and touch a hand across the table, is easy enough to live down'。

Andr Aciman casts a shimmering light over each facet of desire, to probe how we ache, want and waver, and ultimately how we sometimes falter and let go of the very ones we want the most。 We may not know what we want。 We may remain enigmas to ourselves and to others。 But sooner or later we discover who we've always known we were。

Positively surprised! I left this book aside, in 2019? can't remember why。 Started it one sunny afternoon near the Yarra river, and I'm finishing it now, 2021, back in my hometown。 I'm not sure how it happened, but I was able to pick it up where I'd left off and somehow, it felt more meaningful now。 I should read it again, now, uninterruptedly。 I loved it today。 Thanks again, Mr。 Aciman。 Positively surprised! GORGEOUS! Andre just GETS how to build delicious tension and give us those wonderful insights into the introspection of desire。 I cannot wait to read it again。 To read his books are to be transported into the most wonderful vacation。

I was taken aback by Aciman's ability to summarise love - and basically the entire human condition - into the simplest of sentences。 It was quietly shocking, how he unapologetically captured innate feelings and purified them into a written state。 However, the reason I'm unable to forget Enigma Variations is because Aciman doesn't reduce love to a single form; he understands that every instance of it is one and its own。 I was taken aback by Aciman's ability to summarise love - and basically the entire human condition - into the simplest of sentences。 It was quietly shocking, how he unapologetically captured innate feelings and purified them into a written state。 However, the reason I'm unable to forget Enigma Variations is because Aciman doesn't reduce love to a single form; he understands that every instance of it is one and its own。 。。。more

this book was a gift from one of my dearest friends, and it was somewhat great, but not amazing some lines were truly magical and made me feel like i was in love with the other character, but some were quite boring he really normalised love for me, it was kind of the same thing over again but in different words, but it was quite nice, i love the small things in this book overall this was a great book and if you want you could read it, but i wouldn't really hype anyone to read it tho, according to this book was a gift from one of my dearest friends, and it was somewhat great, but not amazing some lines were truly magical and made me feel like i was in love with the other character, but some were quite boring he really normalised love for me, it was kind of the same thing over again but in different words, but it was quite nice, i love the small things in this book overall this was a great book and if you want you could read it, but i wouldn't really hype anyone to read it tho, according to me the first story was the best 。。。more

Without the beautiful writing style I would've given this a 2 stars。 I enjoyed the first three stories but then we took a nose dive with the last two IMO。 Also, a story about a sad privileged dude? Can't say that I can relate to that。 Without the beautiful writing style I would've given this a 2 stars。 I enjoyed the first three stories but then we took a nose dive with the last two IMO。 Also, a story about a sad privileged dude? A slow burn that read like 3 novellas in one。 Paul, the protagonist, spends the entire book pining over whoever catches his eye at the time。 I understand Aciman's attempt to allude to the many sides of Paul, the variations, but it felt scattered and abrupt overall。 Though, there were a handful of lines stitching the book together, the only redeemable quality of the novel。 A slow burn that read like 3 novellas in one。 Paul, the protagonist, spends the entire book pining over whoever catches his eye at the time。 I understand Aciman's attempt to allude to the many sides of Paul, the variations, but it felt scattered and abrupt overall。 Though, there were a handful of lines stitching the book together, the only redeemable quality of the novel。 。。。more

Loved the first two chapters, however after finishing the second, I became aware of the 'now I'm going to move onto the next part of my life and leave this short tale unresolved' theme and put the book down。 Maybe I'm a fool for walking into this book not knowing the structure [it's essentially a collection of short stories I think]??? I'm just a bit miffed at the 'gaps' of both Manfred's part and Nanni's - like, I need to know THE REST of these characters tales w Paul。。。 Like, tell me in explic Loved the first two chapters, however after finishing the second, I became aware of the 'now I'm going to move onto the next part of my life and leave this short tale unresolved' theme and put the book down。 Maybe I'm a fool for walking into this book not knowing the structure [it's essentially a collection of short stories I think]??? I'm just a bit miffed at the 'gaps' of both Manfred's part and Nanni's - like, I need to know THE REST of these characters tales w Paul。。。 Like, tell me in explicit detail what HAPPENED on the tennis court the next day 🥵 (this is where someone tells me that actually if I bothered to read on, I'd find out hahaha - I don't get this impression tho from other reviews)。 Another thing, it may just be my attention span, but I'd only really 'start' getting into the stories a few pages before they close! I just don't think I'm very synched up with this book lol。 There's also 'implications' all over the place that took me a while to get。 Again, might just be a me-thing (I'm not the most clued up), but I just found it difficult to have to assume stuff, and not have things explicitly told to me。 Summary: love the writing style for most part (except when things are vague), but didn't like the lack of endings in the two stories I read (lol) and was left wanting to know more。If my review is bollocks and I should read on, then someone please correct me。 I'm just putting it down so I can move into something better suited to me 😄😄😄 。。。more

4。5Poetic, intricate, complex, beautiful about falling in love, trying to approach others or obsessing over others。 Irritating, vexing, tiring at times。 Narcissism generally is。 The prose is magical。The devil is in the detail and Aciman is the master。 One of the best novelists of our time。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I really enjoy Acimans writing, how he describes the human form and his protagonists obsessions with certain people he meets through his life, but I was quite disappointed in the last line of the book。 It just made my thoughts of the Paul change drastically and actually feel a bit angry about him。 Why would he still be chasing that imaginary person, or is it that we are never satisfied who we end up with, we will always want someone more。。。

He don’t deserves anything。 André Aciman once again wrote a beautiful novel。 While reading trough this book it make me fell angry and desperate。 You want Paul to stay with one person, but he always end up leaving everyone。 He have relationships that everyone wishes for but not always gets it and that's the thing it make me so upset but this doesn't mean it's a bad book, it's the opposite of that。 He don’t deserves anything。 André Aciman once again wrote a beautiful novel。 While reading trough this book it make me fell angry and desperate。 You want Paul to stay with one person, but he always end up leaving everyone。 He have relationships that everyone wishes for but not always gets it and that's the thing it make me so upset but this doesn't mean it's a bad book, it's the opposite of that。 。。。more

I love the authors writing but this book had some flaws。 I felt the straight romances were less real feeling。 If it wasn’t for the first part and Manfred this would be a 3/5 stars。 The first part was really amazing and had me completely interested, but maybe that’s because I’m 17 and still a child who can relate better to him then。 I felt after that it all felt average except for the next homosexual relationship which again had something special。 I feel he writes amazing homosexual relationships I love the authors writing but this book had some flaws。 I felt the straight romances were less real feeling。 If it wasn’t for the first part and Manfred this would be a 3/5 stars。 The first part was really amazing and had me completely interested, but maybe that’s because I’m 17 and still a child who can relate better to him then。 I felt after that it all felt average except for the next homosexual relationship which again had something special。 I feel he writes amazing homosexual relationships and would love to read more of his work。 。。。more
